10 tips for planning and enjoying your family trip

Throughout these 8 years of working with the Viajar com Crianças agency, the biggest concern we see from parents when choosing the next family travel destination is undoubtedly knowing whether their choice is appropriate based on their children’s age and whether they will actually enjoy it.

If you are a parent who believes that children can go anywhere at any age, you are right: children exist all over the world. However, if you pay attention to the restrictions and benefits that each destination and age have, your trip can certainly be better enjoyed.

The secret to realizing a dream trip will only happen if it is well planned in every detail, so I have compiled some tips that can help you make your choices.

1 – Recognize the needs your child has today: (infrastructure/ bedtime/ difficulty with food/ frequently needing to see a pediatrician or health clinic)

2 – Analyze your family’s profile: (do they have patience to endure long logistics?/ do they enjoy nature but are not willing to face discomfort?/ do they like to take things slow and enjoy each destination to the fullest?)

3 – Align your expectations: (evaluate whether you are willing to give up some attractions, make several stops, or even interrupt your tours due to the age restrictions of your children)

4 – Evaluate if the investment is worth it (if you choose a destination that you do not intend to return with your family and have to miss out on several things, is it not worth waiting a little longer and enjoying everything without restrictions?)

5 – Respect each individual’s uniqueness: each family member’s taste and expectations should be considered

6 – Prioritize what you really need on these holidays (run non-stop?/ rest? Have more quality time with your family?)

7 – Provide experiences: organize your trip thinking about something extra you can offer to your family (knowledge that will help your child in school or in life, for example)

8 – Reserve time to play and talk with your children: trips are perfect for getting out of the routine and spending more time with your family, so even if you are tired and the children are having fun in the kids club, reserve some time just for yourselves

9 – Handle problems with good humor: trips are the perfect stage to lose luggage, encounter problems at the hotel, flight delays and everything else that only happens to those who travel; so remember that you are on vacation and turn the difficulty into good stories to tell when you return home. Besides teaching your children to have flexibility in life, it will bring lightness and joy to your family.

10 – Be the best gift you bring in your luggage: Remember, you can give the best trip to your child, to the most perfect or even the most expensive destination on the planet, but the best gift will always be YOU entirely for them.

After I wrote these tips, I stopped and wondered if they might be a bit too obvious to be included in my column, but upon careful evaluation of everything I’ve written, they address all the fears parents have when making the final decision about their destination, and are the root cause of frustration due to a lack of proper travel planning and its successes.

Many parents are more concerned with choosing the right flight and hotel, tours, and perfect logistics, and forget about the basics: what is truly important to their family.

And each family is unique! What may be good for one may not necessarily be good for another, which is why we need to stop and think carefully about every decision that affects your family.

Your next vacation is very important!
