When to travel to Valle del Elqui with family
- October and November: Beginning of tourist season, with pleasant weather and few tourists, since Chileans and Argentines are not yet on vacation.
- December to February: Very high season. Although visitor numbers increase, it’s not bothersome. Booking observatory visits in advance is recommended.
- March and April: Harvest months, grape harvest time. Weather still favorable for outdoor activities and fewer tourists.
- May to September: Low season. Some activities are reduced or paused due to cold and snow in the mountains. Vines are dormant, without leaves.
How to get to Valle del Elqui
Access to Valle del Elqui is through the city of La Serena, which is 294 miles north of Santiago, or 1 hour by flight. The car trip from Santiago takes approximately 5 hours. From La Serena to Valle del Elqui, it’s another 40 miles to Vicuña. The journey can be made by plane to La Serena, followed by car or bus to the valley.
- Plane: La Serena has an airport with frequent flights from Santiago.
- Car: Roads are excellent, and the trip allows stops to appreciate the landscape.
- Bus: Depart from La Serena and Coquimbo terminals, with several daily departures, except in low season.
How long to stay in Valle del Elqui with family
To make the most of Valle del Elqui, a minimum of four days is recommended, with one week being ideal. A popular itinerary includes:
- Day 1: Arrival in Vicuña, observatory visit, and Gabriela Mistral Museum.
- Day 2: Exploration of Pisco Elqui, with visits to pisco distilleries.
- Day 3: Culinary experience in Montegrande and outdoor activities in Paihuano.
