Fique Longe da Agua, Shirley!

John Burningham

This is the story of a family embarking on a trip to the beach. Being English, they come prepared in their attire, and the beach is adorned with pebbles. The parents choose to stay on the sandy shore, while Shirley heads into the water. However, as time passes, the parents remain anchored in the same spot, while Shirley delves into the realm of imagination.

We then witness the straightforward, cartesian view of the parents, basking in the sun, clothed on the beach. Meanwhile, Shirley, within her own mind, embarks on a journey along the beach, through the sand, and into the water. It’s fascinating to observe the stark contrast that the same trip can have for different individuals. The place and the experience can be entirely different, especially for a child

ZOO,

João Guimarães Rosa, ilustrado pelo Roger Mello

Roger Mello is an illustrator who is running for the ninth time for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, one of the world’s largest awards for children’s literature, and he is the only Brazilian in the running. This book takes you on a trip to the zoo. The book itself is a journey, unfolding beautifully as you turn its pages. A child can place it on the ground, open it up, and play inside (with toy cars, Polly Pocket dolls, etc.). Moreover, it is entirely poetic. It makes for a beautiful gift!

A grande viagem da senhorita prudência

Charlotte Gastaut

This Book I Often Gifted! Especially to Mothers.

It has this pink color, this Pantone, a color that stands out. It has fabric that recalls old books. There’s Charlotte, the girl playing, and there’s the mother’s speech, which is a grid from which the girl tries to escape: “You’re going to make us late. Put on your socks. Grab this, don’t forget that.” The girl tries to escape and enters through these knives, these holes in the book, into the world of imagination, to hide from the mother’s words. There are many surprises, cutouts, tracing paper… It’s a very beautiful book that enchants.

Kveta Pacovska, who passed away last year, used to say that “the book is the children’s first art gallery.” Hence the importance of offering different books.
